19-20 SEPTEMBER 2019

The Rocella Jonica workshop will be dedicated this year to the section in Marx’s Grundrisse on pre-capitalist modes of production, otherwise known as the Formen. The Formen are a classic in Marxist literature, as well as the object of study of a number of important contemporary researches.
The aim of the workshop is to investigate the manifold aspects of Marx’s analysis in the Formen – the characteristics of pre-capitalists forms of production, their internal differences, their disruption through the advent of capitalism, and so on. The workshop will focus particularly on the way Marx conceptualizes “associative structures” in the Formen, on the peculiar meanings of Marxian concepts like those of “man”, “individual”, “community”, and “society”, and most importantly on the way Marx addresses the question of time and history.
The relevance of Marx’s Formen in this latter respect can be fully appreciated if one compares them to a slightly later text, namely the famous 1859 Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy. While in the Preface time and history seem to coincide because of the linearity of progress determined by the expansion of the productive forces, the Formen seem to identify a plurality of structural models for pre-capitalist societies, which are not amenable to a univocal time-line.
